The braiding techniques from the book are meant for leather and are to be found on typical cowboy related leather.
All trials are made in textile rope or tapes, not leather.
The first technique I tried was the one pass Gaucho knot. These knots are to be found on whips handles and as scraf holders. The weaving is done with 1 end only.
The first attempt is done with a round rope onto a taped bobbin. The obtained braided object is a loop, you can connect start and end together, thus quite puzzling to see how it is made.

For the second attempt was used a folded herringbone tape. This gives a dense, strong and closed weave.
For this sample a conic shape was used, and the herringbone tape unfolded. The conic shape did not stay as the weave was open, and once lifted from the cone, it moved away from its original shape.
Some attempts later, what helped a lot was to look at the diagram below the sketches. At first I found them only confusing, but it helped to count the number of pins, which must always be uneven, just like when you make a circular loom.It makes sense off course. This time I used a soft and stretchy t-yarn, it give a nice look and feel.
The whole thing requires a lot of concentration.
