Possible to make both 2D as 3D shapes.

The shape can be made by following a pattern or working random and
spontaneously.
Ply splitting is mostly done with 4 ply ropes.

We used in our samples 3ply ropes, wich is a bit more difficult.

On the other had, uneven ropes give surprising different patterns on front and back side.
Ply split technique can only be made by using twined ropes.

One rope is connected by the other by splitting through the other rope
The way the ropes are splitted, gives a more open or more closed, firm structure
Upscaling ply-split can be done by using bigger, self-made twined ropes.

It might be possible to ply-split without twined ropes by imitating the twining while working.
Conclusion:

Ply split is a very ingenious technique. Possibiliities look endles. You can make 2D and 3D shapes while playing with colours and rhythm.

It's a time consuming technique which demands concentration. That's why ply-splitting is best done on your own and is too complex for making the technique participative.
